At first glance, it may just seem to be a coincidence to most people. Albeit a strange and unusual occurrence that seems to have happened repeatedly in a short amount of time in small-town America.
At least seventeen people have been arrested during the past six months, all living in different areas of Baldwin and Mobile Counties, and all are charged with sex crimes involving children, including rape and multiple charges of receiving and distributing child pornography.
Another thing that makes these arrests so unusual is that those involved in the crimes had no direct connections to each other, nor the victims, and did not perpetrate or plan the crimes together, and probably never crossed paths with one another.
Many secretive online platforms do have chatrooms and private spaces where people go and talk about various illegal activities including child pornography, and many other online sites disgustingly share photos of underage girls posing nude, partially nude, or engaged in sexual activity with adults.
Although every bit of this is illegal and despicable, it is nearly impossible to track the thousands that are engaged in these crimes.
The unbelievable fact is that the number of those actively searching for such sites is increasing according to investigators with the US Department of Homeland Security which has a specialized internet unit to track such crimes.
Technology today does make investigating, locating, and arresting the culprits better than it has ever been, but it’s still not an instant arrest.
Hours and hours of online investigations, undercover work, and monitoring are involved just to initiate the beginning of a case.
In some of the arrests that have been made recently in Baldwin and Mobile County, Internet Crime Units and the Department of Homeland Security Investigations were able to identify potential online criminal violations being perpetrated locally and passed that information on to local law enforcement agencies who followed up, conducting further investigations, developing probable cause to obtain search and arrest warrants and rounding up the offenders.
The following are some of the arrests that were made over the past six months:

Chad Claybrook, an ALEA trooper was arrested in Talladega County. Claybrook is charged with possession of obscene matter of a person under the age of 17. Claybrook first started working with ALEA in June 2002 but resigned just before his arrest.
And in one of the more bizarre situations involving child pornography crimes, John Watson, 54, of Dothan, an ALEA license examiner is accused of sending pornographic images to the State House and Gov. Kay Ivey.
He resigned after his arrest, but the investigation continues according to the police.
