ORANGE BEACH, Ala. The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man who has been harassing Christina Woerner McInnis, a candidate for Alabama Agriculture and Industries Commissioner.
McInnis reported that her family has been living in fear after a man started sending her threatening messages through Facebook, email, and texts.
“Very inappropriate to repeat, but basically, I’m coming for you and your children,” said McInnis.
McInnes said that she doesn’t understand why this person chose to threaten and harass her.
Clate Lee Clark, Jr. was charged with harassing communications on July 23rd. The 58-year-old was found guilty on Wednesday and sentenced to 90 days in jail.
Baldwin County Sheriff Anthony Lowery says a search of his electronic devices revealed evidence he has targeted other women, but he says, no one else has filed police reports with his office.
“He typically would find realtors, is what it looks like, and he would do a lot of these same actions,” said Lowery.
Lowery says the misdemeanor charge of harassing communications doesn’t adequately address the nightmare McInnis and her family experienced.
McInnis, an Orange Beach resident, spoke out about her ordeal in a news conference Thursday morning with Sheriff Lowery and Orange Beach Mayor Tony Kennon. McInnis says by bringing attention to the issue she hopes to encourage others to come forward. Lowery and Kennon believe state lawmakers should change the criminal code to address online harassment and make it a more serious offense.
Sheriff Lowery stated that he believes the law should be changed to a felony.
