Academy Sports Employee Arrested For Organized Retail Theft

MOBILE, Ala. Retail theft nationwide has been on the rise for many years and much of the retail losses are a direct result of collusion according to loss prevention experts.
Such was the case recently in Mobile, when store management discovered that an employee and another person had worked together to steal merchandise from the Academy Sports and Outdoors store located at 3725 Airport Boulevard.
On Friday, December 12, 2025, at approximately 3:10 p.m., police were called to the store regarding the theft and learned that it had been going on for a while.
Police officers discovered a female employee, identified as, Larrynette Rankin, 53, allowed a female to pass through her checkout line on several occasions with the employee only scanning certain items while the unscanned items were placed into a shopping bag.
The customer then exited the store with the unpaid merchandise.
After an investigation, Rankin, 53, was arrested and transported to Metro Jail.
There is no word on whether the second female will also be arrested.
