MOBILE COUNTY, AL. Private roads are often built to bring homeowners in and out of a subdivision, commercial property or a residential community, especially in rural areas.
However, sometimes those roads are poorly built or maintained and are known to collapse leaving residents without any method of getting back home.
And right now, more than twenty people are facing this reality on a private road in Mobile County after heavy rain caused a washout overnight.
The sheriff’s department said that the county does not maintain Spice Pond Way South because it is one of those private roads.
Throughout the county, there are many private roads leading into subdivisions, apartment complexes, commercial office complexes and various other private properties.
Residents say that their road is partially washed away, leaving a massive hole that makes it impossible to get in or out and even though they’ve called several government agencies for help, they’re still left stranded and unable to get home.
Constance Fluker has lived on the road for 25 years and said she has never seen it this bad.
“If somebody got sick or there was an emergency, you would have to get a helicopter to get you out because you can’t go in and out,” Fluker said.
For now, residents say they’re trying to find a company that will temporarily repair the road.
Residents have petitioned Mobile County twice to take over the private road with no results.
