BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala.
A San Antonio man has landed in the Baldwin County jail after sheriff investigators say that he was involved in several crimes in our area.
Marco Antonio Tavarez faces four felony charges: possession of burglar’s tools, trafficking stolen identities, mail theft with sensitive personally identifying information, and possession of a firearm by a person forbidden.
According to the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, a sheriff’s detective arrested Tavarez after allegedly finding him with numerous pieces of mail containing sensitive personally identifying information, including Social Security numbers, driver’s licenses, checks and credit card information belonging to at least 10 separate people.
According to a complaint filed June 2 in Baldwin County District Court, Tavarez was also found in possession of grinders, bolt cutters, arrow keys, a cutting tool, a crowbar, a hammer and a file set.
According to the criminal complaint, Tavarez possessed identifying information of five or more separate people without authorization, consent or permission, according to the complaint. The documents were accompanied by blank credit cards, card readers, scam and fraud instructions, counterfeit keys for U.S. post boxes and locking doors of U.S. post boxes.
Investigators also said that Tavarez was found in possession of two firearms in the trunk of his vehicle. He has a prior conviction for assault of a federal agent with a deadly weapon, and Tavarez was sentenced to 70 months in federal prison in a 2019 case involving assault of a federal agent and human smuggling.
