An amendment on the ballot in Florida, known as Amendment 3, a bill that would have legalized marijuana in the Sunshine State, failed on Tuesday.
At the end of the day, we didn’t receive over 60% of the vote Tuesday which is necessary to become law said one proponent of the bill.
But the amendment did receive a strong 56% of the yes vote, according to Associated Press.
The marijuana measure would have allowed adults 21 years old and older to possess about 3 ounces of marijuana. It would also allow businesses already growing and selling medical marijuana to sell cannabis for personal use.
This vote came at a time when federal officials are moving to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug.
Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis and other state leaders spent months campaigning against the measures. Democrats heavily campaigned in support of both issues, hoping to inspire party supporters to the polls.
Among DeSantis’ arguments against the marijuana initiative is that it would have hurt the state’s tourism because of a weed stench in the air. But other Republican leaders, including Florida resident Donald Trump and former state GOP Chairman Sen. Joe Gruters, supported legalizing recreational marijuana.
