BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. May is Water Safety Month, and it brings awareness to everyone how quickly a life can be lost in many bodies of water starting with your backyard swimming pool, to the vast oceans of our country.
Sadly, Alabama ranks among the highest in the nation for child drowning deaths, including as high as sixth place according to data on child drowning incidents.
These statistics continue to grow even with nationwide enhanced training and standardized water safety rules and the community organizations like the American Red Cross who promote water safety.
Here along the Alabama Gulf Coast with many inland lakes and rivers and the Gulf waters, we tragically see several drownings each year.
Along Alabama’s Gulf Coast we have frequent undertows and powerful, unpredictable rip currents.
An undertow is a natural, subsurface current that pulls water back toward the sea after waves break on the shore. While it creates a strong, temporary surge that can drag your feet and pull you down the beach, it generally does not drag swimmers far out to sea.
We also have deceptive sandbars that people may walk on and then they suddenly disappear leaving people treading water or going under the water.
At least 10 people die every day in the United States from drowning, according to the American Red Cross. The CDC says drowning is the leading cause of death for children under the age of four.
Nationwide, hundreds if not thousands of “near drownings” occur. These occur when a person goes under water and are rescued. Many need to be resuscitated and even hospitalized. Had a good Samaritan or a trained professional not been close by, these would have resulted in a fatal drowning.
“At least one person needs to be aware of each child,” Jeff Colton, a lifeguard and swim instructor said. “It’s very important to keep your eyes on the children in the water no matter what.”
Home pools are dangerous for young children, and it’s recommended that the pool no matter its size be protected by secure gates, pool alarms and U.S. Coast Guard approved life jackets or floatation devices around the water. Parents should also talk with children early about how to safely exit a pool and what to do if they need help.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. A tragic, senseless murder of a north Alabama nurse has once again called attention to the rise in violence against healthcare workers.
A nurse, identified as 27-year-old Ada Doss was shot and killed in the south parking lot of the DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa.
According to the Tuscaloosa Sheriff’s Captain Jack Kennedy, with the violent crime’s unit, investigators identified the suspect involved in the shooting as 41-year-old Matthew James Taylor.
Kennedy said Taylor had been dropped off at DCH earlier in the day on his own request for help. However, he never entered the hospital or the emergency room; instead, he loitered on campus for several hours.
While on campus, Taylor reportedly tried to rob a woman who was already inside her car by waving a handgun and telling her to get out of her car. Police said the woman was able to drive away.
Shortly after, a nurse, identified as Doss, was walking to her car during shift change when police said she was approached by Taylor, who once again was flashing a handgun.
Authorities said Taylor tried to take Doss’ purse and during that interaction, he shot her with malice. According to authorities, Doss died at the scene. Taylor then went through her purse while also trying to take her car.
Captain Kennedy stated that Tuscaloosa police responded, finding Taylor still armed and only feet away from where he had shot Doss. Authorities said Taylor showed signs of mental illness and he was taken into custody.
The 41-year-old, who has a reported limited criminal history, is facing charges that include capital murder. Police said there is no connection between Taylor and Doss.
“We are all grieving today. Ada Doss was a member of our DCH family,” the hospital shared in a statement. “This tragic crime was the result of a mental health crisis that could have taken place anywhere, but regretfully, it took place in our parking lot.”

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. The 30th Orange Beach Billfish Classic, has kicked off again this year with teams vying for $1.6 million in prize money.
Thursday morning was a perfect blue-sky day with the bright sun shining as sixty-two boats launched to kick off this year’s tournament.
Thursday morning for the 30th Orange Beach Billfish Classic, marking the largest field in the tournament’s history as teams compete for a prize package of nearly $1.6 million.
Steve Hall said this year’s event is one for the books with captains already positioning for favorite fishing spots.
This tournament kicks off billfish season each year and we see a lot of local teams, but we also see teams that come from outside the Gulf Coast area, Hall said.
Anglers who have been here before all have their secret fishing holes and try to get out to them before others make it there first.
“Sometimes you can pick wrong and sometimes you can pick right, so you just go out there and fish and do what you can do,” he said.
The offshore big game fishing event targets Marlin, Sail Fish and Swordfish.
This year’s weigh-ins will be at the Wharf and will also be accepting blue marlin, tuna, dolphin and wahoo and tuna. The weigh-in station opens at 7 p.m. on Friday and 6 p. m. on Saturday at The Wharf. Admission is free.
The bill fish tournament is just one of many that are scheduled along the Gulf Coast in 2026.

The Mobile Area Water and Sewer System (MAWSS) announced Thursday that the Gulf Coast Regional Maritime Response and Render-Safe Team successfully retrieved and detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) found underwater at the Converse Reservoir dam.
The multi-agency effort included the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, FBI Bomb Squad, Mobile Police Department Explosive Ordinance Detail, ALEA Bomb Squad, and the Daphne Search and Rescue Team.
The device, a grenade-type IED, was initially located by divers surveying the dam for routine repair and maintenance. Following this discovery, MAWSS alerted the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, who coordinated the multi-agency response for analysis, retrieval, and safe demolition.
“Our top priority is keeping your drinking water safe,” said Bud McCrory, MAWSS Director. “This is an unprecedented threat, and we are fortunate that this device was discovered before it could cause serious damage to our water supply or harm to individuals. We are grateful for the professionalism and competency of our law enforcement partners – as well as the quick thinking of our contractors and divers – in identifying this device and safely destroying it.”
The reservoir and dam are federally designated critical infrastructure; the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has been made aware of the incident.
