BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala.
During the late-night hours and through the overnight, as many people were sleeping, an all-out manhunt was underway for a wanted murder suspect from Georgia who fled police as they closed in on him in Baldwin County
What started as a pursuit, quickly turned into a multiple-agency manhunt that shut down a stretch of Interstate 65 through Baldwin County for hours.
According to ALEA, a pursuit began in Conecuh County after the Evergreen Police Department attempted to stop a driver that officers learned was wanted on a murder charge in Georgia.
The suspect is Mike Thomas, 28, of Stockbridge, Ga., ALEA said.
ALEA said Thomas refused to stop and led officers with multiple agencies on a pursuit that ended in Baldwin County near the 45-mile marker where spike strips were deployed to disable the suspect’s vehicle.
Thomas exited his vehicle and then attempted to carjack another vehicle which was stopped in traffic, ALEA said. After the unsuccessful carjacking attempt, Thomas fled on foot into a nearby wooded area, officials said.
Eventually, Thomas was taken into custody and transported to a local area hospital for a medical evaluation, according to ALEA.
The manhunt resulted in a section of I-65 in Baldwin County being shut down overnight into the Monday morning hours.
ALEA’s Aviation Unit, the Alabama Department of Correction’s K-9 Team, the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Special Operations Unit, along with multiple other law enforcement agencies, all assisted in the manhunt and capture, according to officials.
ALEA’s State Bureau of Investigation is investigating an alleged assault and robbery that occurred Sunday on I-65 near the 41-mile marker in Baldwin County involving Thomas. Once that investigation is complete, findings will be turned over to the Baldwin County District Attorney’s Office, ALEA said.
