SUMMERDALE, Ala. A Baldwin County deputy sheriff who lives in the Summerdale area and was not on duty said that as he and his family had arrived at home several weeks ago when several dogs rushed up onto his property and began growling.
The deputy tried to shoo the dogs away, but as he continued to feel threatened, the deputy fired his firearm, hitting both dogs several times.
The sheriff’s deputy called Summerdale Police and his shift supervisor to report the incident.
According to Summerdale Police Chief Michael Gaull, the deputy reported his family had just arrived home and “as he was walking outside to check on his family when a Pitbull ran towards him growling,” and that he “discharged his weapon to keep from being attacked.”
An administrative review of the incident by the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office cleared the deputy of any wrongdoing, concluding “the deputy did not violate any policies, procedures, or criminal laws.”
One of the dogs that was shot later died.
The owner of the two dogs said that she has contacted an attorney for possible civil actions.
The investigation by Summerdale Police continues, and once it is complete, it will be turned over to the District Attorney’s Office for review.
