The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) reported that its troopers responded to 216 traffic crashes and 712 calls for assistance during the winter storm that swept through central and southern Alabama from January 21 to January 23.
Colonel Jonathan Archer, Director of ALEA’s Department of Public Safety, emphasized the importance of road safety during adverse weather conditions. “Road safety can never be overstated, especially during extreme weather events such as snowstorms,” Archer said. “We ask all motorists to remain alert, reduce speed, buckle up, and exercise patience when navigating inclement weather.”
ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor acknowledged the efforts of local first responders and state partners who managed traffic conditions and assisted those in need. “We would also like to recognize the extensive efforts of local first responders and all our state partners who worked tirelessly during this winter weather event,” Taylor said. “We also appreciate the cooperation of citizens who sought updates on weather and roadway conditions.”
Tragically, a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 65 in Butler County on January 21 resulted in one fatality. Weather conditions were a factor in the crash, which also injured a 1-year-old child and another adult, both of whom were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family who lost a loved one that day,” Taylor said. “We are also praying for a speedy recovery for the child and individual who were both injured. Despite weather conditions, we encourage everyone to heed safety messages and obey Alabama’s traffic laws at all times.”
