GULF SHORES, Ala. At least five pedestrians have been struck by motor vehicles this week in Baldwin County, several with serious injuries.
At least three of the collisions occurred in the late evening hours, and one involved a law enforcement vehicle that struck a pedestrian.
Jill Kowalski, a former trooper, said accidents in general tend to increase this time of year as it gets darker earlier and there’s more traffic on the roadway. This time of year there’s more people out doing holiday shopping and going to area events.
While pedestrians should walk on the sidewalks, many rural and some city roads do not have sidewalks and pedestrians should walk on the left side of the road facing oncoming traffic, as far away from the travel lanes as possible (usually on the shoulder).
Kowalski said wearing reflective clothing or carrying a lit flashlight can help drivers see you and prevent collisions.
At around 5:35 p.m., a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle in Spanish Fort, sustaining some injuries.
Another pedestrian collision was also reported in Daphne Friday night.
Traffic collisions in general in Baldwin County seem to have increased steadily in recent years with more crashes involving injuries and fatalities.
Law enforcement here and across the country have contributed this increase to inattentive driving, speeding and driving while impaired.
