MOBILE, AL. The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) has arrested a Mobile man following an investigation into an incident involving a dog that was intentionally set on fire.
On Friday, October 30, 2026, at approximately 4:00 p.m., MCSO deputies responded to 142 E. Allenby Street after receiving a report from an anonymous caller that a man had set a dog on fire.
Upon arrival, deputies located and detained Ryan Lekeith Nelson (DOB: 12/11/1979), who matched the description provided by the caller.
During the investigation, sheriff detectives determined that the incident occurred in the backyard of the residence and involved a pit bull.
During an interview with investigators, Nelson admitted to using lighter fluid and matches to set the dog on fire, claiming he was defending himself from the animal. However, investigators found no evidence that Nelson had been bitten or sustained any injuries from the dog.
Following consultation with the Mobile County District Attorney’s Office, Nelson was arrested and charged with Aggravated Cruelty to Animals.
“Animal cruelty is unacceptable, and we take these cases very seriously. There is absolutely no justification for intentionally setting an animal on fire. Animals depend on us for their care and protection, and anyone who chooses to deliberately inflict this kind of suffering will be held accountable. I commend our deputies and investigators for their swift response in this case.” Sheriff Paul Burch.
The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office reminds the public that suspected animal cruelty should be reported to law enforcement immediately.
