MOBILE, Ala. A tax preparer company is accused of doing more than just helping folks with doing their taxes.
The US Department of Justice said that six employees of JB Accounting Tax Service LLC, which provided tax preparation services to Mobile residents between 2022 and 2024 defrauded the government out of $177 million dollars in what they’re calling a tax fraud scheme.
Federal authorities said that 47-year-old Jennifer Beverly owned JB Accounting Tax Service LLC and worked with her employees in the scheme.
Now Beverly and her employees including 28-year-old Jadasha Bowman, 42-year-old Kennedy Lawrence Stovall Winston, 36-year-old Solida Lucille Green, 30-year-old Paris Johnson, and 38-year-old Shermeka Benjamin have all been indicted on dozens of federal charges.
“The indictment alleges that, from approximately 2021 through 2024, the defendants participated in a scheme to prepare and submit false and fraudulent federal tax returns to the IRS,” the release read. “The allegedly false items included Schedule C statements, COVID-19 credits, fuel tax credits, credit repayments, estimated tax payments, Schedule A statements, Schedule 3 statements, and education credits.”
The scheme allegedly involved over 9,000 fake federal tax returns, leading to $81 million in refunds being issued.
On top of the indictment, each person also received numerous wire fraud charges:
Beverly — 63 counts of wire fraud
Bowman — 11 counts of wire fraud
Winston — five counts of wire fraud
Green — 11 counts of wire fraud
Lovett — 11 counts of wire fraud
Benjamin —four counts of wire fraud
These charges carry hefty prison terms and fines if found guilty.
