MOBILE, AL. An investigation by the Mobile Police after being notified by an area hospital that several children had been brought in critical condition and appeared to have been abused.
Officials said the children were in such bad shape that the MPD Homicide Unit responded to USA Health Children’s and Women’s, where the children were taken.
Officials said one of the twins is not expected to survive.
Mobile Police Department officers arrested Sara Sprinkle, 25, and Gregory Sullivan, 30, after the three children were taken to the hospital, with two of them near death.
During Sprinkle’s bond hearing on Wednesday, it was brought to light that one of the children is in critical condition and was dying when Sprinkle and Sullivan took him to the hospital.
Prosecutors said the couple also has 2-month-old twins and called them “the most malnourished, dehydrated, emaciated” children they had ever seen.
Police said that this was one of the worst depraved indifference to human life cases that they have ever seen.
“This is absolutely reprehensible to have three young children under, you know, around one, one of them, and then a couple of two-month-olds in this state of affairs,” District Attorney Keith Blackwood said. “You know, this is a situation of neglect where one of the two-month-old twins was very close to death. We have very talented doctors that continue to work with these children, and we’re hoping for the best. It’s hard to characterize anything as the worst ever, but this is certainly some horrific circumstances.”
Sullivan and Sprinkle are each being held on $400,000 bond with a 10% cash component. $200,000 of that bond is for the alleged abuse against the severely malnourished twin alone. If they make bail, a judge has ordered they are to have no contact with any children, including their own and will have to stay on house arrest.
Blackwood said the couple has two other children who are now in state custody. The couple will be back in court for an arraignment on Tuesday.
