Two Alabama State University Students Have Been Murdered in Just Three Weeks

MONTGOMERY, Ala. For the second time in less than a month, an Alabama State University student has been murdered.
Montgomery police reported that Kaylin Smith, 19, was killed in what police believe was a domestic incident involving a juvenile. The unnamed juvenile, who is the suspect, was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition from what investigators say was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The teen was identified as living in Snellville, Georgia but no other details have been released by police.
ASU President Dr. Quinton Ross, Jr. said Smith was a freshman Criminal Justice major from Louisiana.
Police responded to an apartment on Zelda Road around 4 a.m. with reports of a prowler.
Officers determined that it was a disturbance and called for more officers.
SWAT forced entry into the residence, which is not on campus, after hearing gunfire.
Authorities were able to get two people out of the apartment safely before finding Smith and the suspect.
ASU said in a statement Tuesday morning that the Montgomery Police Department notified the university about the investigation, but the university is not available to make any comments at this time according to a spokesperson.
Smith’s homicide comes just weeks after another student, 20-year-old Ava Walters, was killed at an off-campus hotel room used for student housing.
In that homicide, police arrested Walters’ boyfriend and charged him with her death.
