MOBILE, Ala. Authorities say that a Mobile woman has been indicted arrested after leaving her newborn baby at the hospital after giving birth. That child tested positive for drugs police said.
and this is not the first time that the woman has given birth to a child who tested positive for drugs.
34-year-old Raven Jones was arrested July 10 and charged with child abandonment and chemical endangerment of a child.
Three years ago, another baby was born to Jones, who also tested positive for cocaine and opioids.
In Alabama as in many other states, a parent may surrender their child after birth once certain documents are completed and that was not done.
This was not a situation where the “safe haven box” would have applied said a Mobile County Chief Assistant District Attorney, Jennifer Susman.
Under Alabama’s Safe Haven Law, parents can safely surrender their newborn without facing charges, but the law does not apply if the child is considered harmed. Since the newborns tested positive for drugs, prosecutors say they were legally harmed. That’s why Jones is facing charges.
Jones is being held at the Mobile metro jail without bond according to jail records. She’s scheduled to be back in court July 17, 2025.
