A bank robbery that occurred in Mobile on Wednesday at the Family Security Credit Union on Airport Boulevard has led to the arrest of a Mississippi man.

Joseph Derrick Nelson, 67, of Moss Point, Miss., faces a charge of first-degree robbery. He is scheduled for a bond hearing on Friday.

According to police, officers responded to the bank located at 7690 Airport Blvd for a report of a robbery after a man handed a stickup note to the teller and showed a handgun.

Police were quickly able to apprehend Nelson and take him into custody.

For now, Nelson faces a state felony charge of armed bank robbery, however in some bank robbery cases, federal prosecutors could seek a federal indictment because banks and credit unions are federal institutions and fall under federal jurisdiction.
