The Fort Morgan Volunteer Fire Department and Kiva Dunes, a beach and golf resort have partnered to add AEDs throughout their property.
During a cardiac arrest event. every second counts and having an AED (automated external defibrillator) close by could mean the difference between life and death.

The partnership will enhance the presence of onsite AEDs, helping ensure the safety of golfers and vacationers through immediate response to cardiac emergencies, according to a news release.

“Due to the volume of guests that we receive in this area and the distance we are from the nearest ER, having resort staff that is educated on what to do during times of emergency is vital,” Fire Chief Lee Steiner said. “There was a situation a few months ago with a guest having a medical emergency near the clubhouse. Due to the fire department being on the grounds with an AED, they were able to achieve a positive outcome for the patient due to early defibrillation.”

As cardiac arrest takes place, the heart stops beating, leaving the patient without a pulse and unable to breathe — a fatal occurrence 90% of the time if not treated immediately, the release details. AEDs can increase the survival rate drastically, up to 75%, with statistics claiming nine out of 10 victims who receive an AED shock within the first minute survive.

The Fort Morgan Volunteer Fire Department also conducts CPR training and certification for resort/hotel employees, with Kiva Dunes signing up for classes this fall.

“Having knowledgeable staff available to aid in care if an emergency should arise is invaluable,” the fire department added. “Additionally, having extra hands on scene is beneficial to first responders, allowing for more efficient and effective emergency care.”
