The Huntsville City Council honored two police officers with live-saving medals following a home invasion last August.

Officer Jason Toney and Sgt. Kevin Lambert received their medals at the council meeting on Jan. 9.

According to Police Chief Kirk Giles, Toney and Lambert responded to a call in the 6200 block of Ryan Village on Aug. 24. An armed suspect had entered the home and was threatening a woman and her child.

“The details the officers were given was that the suspect was going to harm the woman and the child,” Giles said. “Sgt. Lambert and Officer Toney were the first two to arrive. They quickly formulated a plan to get the woman and the child to safety.”

Giles said Lambert tried to divert the subject’s attention while the woman and child ran out of the residence.

“The suspect caught on to this plan,” Gile said. “He began shooting at the lady as she was running out the door. Officer Toney was positioned just outside the door and shot the suspect in order to protect the woman and the child.”

The woman was struck by one of the suspect’s rounds but was able to flee to safety. The child she was carrying was unharmed, Giles said.

“The woman survived the encounter,” Giles said. “The quick-thinking and bravery demonstrated by Sgt. Lambert and Officer Toney were instrumental in preventing a very tragic outcome. Their actions undoubtedly saved the lives of this lady and her child in a very extremely dangerous situation.”

The chief said their actions “exemplified high standards and heroism.”
