FAIRHOPE Ala. The volunteer library board met to review books and discuss their options for books that the Alabama State Library Service had placed on a list of inappropriate books that caused the library earlier this year to have a suspension of state funding for violating new state policies adopted in 2024.

During their session, several people who volunteered to read some of these books gave their reviews and addressed their opinions.

In the end, the Fairhope library board of trustees voted Monday afternoon to relocate five books challenged in 2023 by patrons for alleged sexually explicit content policy violations from the teens to the adult section.
These book titles included: Boy Toy, Damsel, The Haters, and Tricks.

But they also voted to keep nine others in place including Beyond Magenta, Shine, Crank, Doing It, Identical, Lighter Than My Shade, The Handmaid’s Tale, and Perks of Being a Wallflower.

One book, Sex is a Funny Word, was moved to the ‘parental shelf which is in the youth section.

As in previous meetings, not everyone was happy about some of the decisions.

Currently, state funding is still suspended.
