Bay Minette Police Arrest Two People on Drug Charges After Conducting Traffic Stop

BAY MINETTE, Ala. On May 12, 2025, police conducted a traffic stop for a moving violation southbound on McMeans Avenue near West 9th Street in Bay Minette.

The Honda sedan was observed committing several traffic infractions.

As the officer approached the vehicle, he observed the driver attempting to conceal a used syringe under the driver’s seat. During the traffic stop, Bay Minette Police officers searched the vehicle, as well as both the driver and passenger. Officers discovered the following contraband concealed within the passenger compartment:

  • 66 grams of methamphetamine
  • 4 grams of powder cocaine
  • 50 grams of high-grade marijuana
  • Numerous items of drug paraphernalia used to consume, inject, or smoke illicit narcotics

The driver, identified as Jay Douglas Trantham, informed officers that he and his passenger, Rachel Cathaleen Laster, were returning to Fairhope from a short trip to Atlanta, Georgia.

The driver of the vehicle faces numerous charges including:

o Drug Trafficking

o Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance

o Unlawful Possession of Marijuana 2nd Degree

o Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

The passenger of the vehicle, identified as  Rachel Cathaleen Laster was also arrested and charged with:

o Drug Trafficking

o Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance

o Unlawful Possession of Marijuana 2nd Degree

o Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

Both individuals were transported to the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Center, where they remain held without bond pending a bond hearing.
