ESCAMBIA CO, Ala. An Atmore woman now faces a slew of charges after being indicted by a grand jury in a wreck in February that killed her two-year-old son.
Sarah Janes was involved in a fatal head-on collision just outside of Atmore on Highway 31 in February was arrested and charged with reckless murder in the death of her son and two counts of Assault 1st-DUI. At that time, troopers said that she had been driving under the influence of alcohol and possible drugs and that she couldn’t remember what happened. Troopers also reported that her blood alcohol content was 0.116 which is above the legal limit of 0.08.
A grand jury indictment handed down this week now charges Janes with Reckless Murder, six counts of Assault 1st-DUI and Combined Influence.
The indictment said Janes was “under the combined influence of alcohol and a controlled substance which rendered her incapable of safely driving.”
The driver of the minivan that Janes hit told troopers “When the car came over the hill all she saw was lights coming at them and there was nothing she could do”.
Janes two-year-old son died after he was taken to the hospital. Janes was also taken to Sacred Heart Hospital and another child in her vehicle was also transported to the hospital.
The driver of the minivan and four children were taken to the hospital, too, according to troopers.
Janes is being held on a $750,000 bond in the county jail.
If she makes bail, she’ll be on house arrest, and she won’t be able to drive a vehicle and is prohibited from contacting the victim or victim’s family. She’ll also have to undergo drug testing.
