MOBILE, Ala. An emergency on the water was quickly responded to by local authorities and the US Coast Guard Friday night at around 9:30 p.m.
The Coast Guard Mobile stated that a sailboat began taking on water with 8 people aboard and called for help.
The 26-foot craft was about a mile out from shore at the APM terminal and began to sink in the Mobile River.
Emergency rescue units, including a Coast Guard Helicopter and vessels for the Alabama Marine Police, were immediately dispatched, and four of the people were airlifted and brought to Brookley Field.
Arriving ALEA Marine Police vessels retrieved the remaining passengers who had been told to put on life jackets and hold on to flares.
No injuries were reported, and everyone was returned to land safely.
Coast Guard officials said that the 28-foot Wellcraft hit a submerged object and sank in waist-deep water.
