9-Year-Old, 26-Year-Old Cousins Identified in Midfield Rock Quarry Drowning

MIDFIELD Ala. Two cousins disappeared on Saturday afternoon, June 21st, 2025, into the dark, cold waters of a rock quarry near Holcim Industries in Midfield Alabama, a city about ten miles west of Birmingham.
Midfield Mayor Gary Richardson said that 26-year-old Stephon Gardner and 9-year-old Rashad Jackson bodies were recovered Sunday morning after they went into water while fishing at the rock quarry.
Gardner and Jackson were cousins who were staying with family just a few blocks away.
Others in the area witnessed the events and Mayor Richardson says Gardner and Jackson were fishing at the quarry when Jackson fell into the water.
Gardner jumped in the water to assist Jackson, but neither of them resurfaced.
Bystanders at the location who saw the incident then jumped into the water but were unable to help.
Multiple emergency agencies were dispatched to 1500 block of Hartman Industrial Boulevard. including the Midfield Fire Department, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, and EMS.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue say that they were dispatched to the area to conduct a water rescue.
Divers were sent into the water and were able to locate both deceased males.
Mayor Richardson said he spoke to the family Sunday morning after the bodies were found and described it as a very solemn experience.
“Having to experience the grief they were expecting,” Richardson said.
