SPANISH FORT Ala. Numerous calls were made to Baldwin County 911 Communications on Saturday just after 3 p.m., reporting that a child had drowned at the Vinings Apartments located at 10407 US Highway 31 in Spanish Fort.

First responders from the Spanish Fort police and fire departments along with a Medstar ambulance were immediately dispatched to the apartment complex.

A medical helicopter was also dispatched.

While emergency personnel were responding, several people at the complex pulled the child out of the pool and began first-aid steps to resuscitate the child.

When emergency services arrived the child was breathing and was attended to by EMS.

The medical helicopter was canceled and the child was transported by ambulance to an area hospital.

An average of 379 children younger than 15 years old drown in a pool or spa each year in America. Children under 5 accounted for 75% of those deaths, and most drownings occurred in backyard pools when no adults are around, and there are no pool safety barriers.
