The Foley police received calls about gunshots being fired in the area of West Marigold Avenue on the evening of January 14th and several officers responded to the area.
911 dispatchers also reported that callers stated that there was a dogfight in the area of the 600 block of the street.
When officers arrived the disturbance was over, but the police tried to speak to the homeowner, but he would not come to the door.
Patrol officers passed the information on to the Investigations Division Wednesday morning, and officers were able to contact Thomas K Hall, 61, at the residence and he allowed officers to inspect the backyard and the dogs.
According to police, two of the dogs appeared to have been injured during the dogfight and were transported to a local vet for treatment.
Police said that Hall also had an outstanding Failure to Appear warrant and was taken in for that charge and additional questioning.
Hall told investigators that one of the aggressive dogs attacked one of the timid dogs. He could not break up the fight physically and was bit in the process. He then retrieved a shotgun and fired into the ground to break them up. The dog that was attacked was able to break free and ran under a shed in the backyard.
Hall was charged with Discharging a Firearm in the City Limits and two counts of Cruelty to Animals for not seeking medical treatment for the two injured dogs.
Police are investigating to see if any of the dogs are considered vicious under city ordinance.
