Smoke drifting in and out of several areas of Fairhope early Friday morning kept the Fairhope Fire Department busy trying to track down the source of it.
More than a half of dozen calls from residents in the Rock Creek area and beyond called 911 between midnight and 4 a.m. reporting smoke outside, smoke in their attics, or smoke that was penetrating their homes and causing breathing irritations.
Several 911 callers described it as being a strong chemical smell and wondered if there had been a spill in the area. Several other callers even thought that the smoke was coming from their own home or from their neighbor’s home.
Fire Chief Chris Ellis and several firefighters spent almost five hours trying to determine where the strong smell of smoke was coming from but in the end, it was not located.
Then, calls began coming into 911 from the Fly Creek area which also ended with the same result, an unfounded source.
No one became ill or needed medical attention, but many in the area including fire personnel, are still trying to figure out the mystery.
