There were at least twenty separate fires along Interstate 10 from just above the Florida/Alabama line westward on Thursday sending smoke billowing across the Interstate and eventually needing more than a half a dozen fire departments to finally extinguish them all.

The Rosinton Fire Department were initially dispatched to the first call of a grass fire on I-10 just before 2 p.m., soon followed by a second and a third call for other fires further west.
As more calls came into the Baldwin County 911 center, multiple fire departments were needed to help get the fires under control and extinguished.

Rosinton Fire Rescue Captain Michael Shambo reported that a chain of some sort being dragged by a vehicle driving on the interstate may have caused sparks that caused the fires but a final determination of the cause has not been made.

Besides multiple fire departments, the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office and ALEA troopers responded to assist with traffic control.

The fire departments that responded to the fires included: Rosinton, Styx River, Elsannor, Gateswood, Robertsdale, and Loxley.
