Mobile Police Officer Cleared by Grand Jury in Deadly Motorcycle Crash
MOBILE, Ala.
A Mobile Police Officer who faced a possible Grand Jury Indictment in the death of a motorcyclist was cleared of all charges by a Mobile County Grand Jury.
Officer Paul Callegari Jr. was cleared in the fatal March motorcycle accident of Robert Sayen, 67 after investigators said that Callegari was speeding, at least sixteen miles over the speed limit while driving his police vehicle at the intersection of Cody Road and Ziegler Boulevard.
According to a report, the night of the crash, the traffic lights at the intersection malfunctioned, according to MPD. Callegari had a blinking yellow light, and Sayen had a blinking red light. The crash report said that Sayen’s motorcycle hit the driver’s side of Callegari’s patrol car as the officer sped through the intersection.
Six months prior to the motorcycle crash, Callegari was caught on camera beating a handcuffed man. The man Callegari was seen beating was identified as Beezer DuBose Jr. DuBose was pulled over by officers for dark-tinted windows near Dauphin Island Parkway and Halls Mill Road.
The incident was investigated by former U.S. Attorney Kenyen Brown. Brown determined that Callegari’s tactics were excessive.
Callegari filed a complaint to the District Court that accused DuBose of grabbing his groin. Brown said Callegari used that to justify his reason to hit DuBose. Brown later debunked Callegari’s claim during his investigation.
When asked if Callegari was back on patrol, MPD released a statement saying the department has followed all protocols but did not elaborate.
