In a recent meeting, the Mobile City Council addressed a new piece of equipment that the Mobile Police Department is considering adding to their array of equipment.

And now, a nearly half-a-million-dollar purchase of a large ground vehicle robot for the Police Department’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit is being considered for approval.

The 600-pound robot is equipped with cameras able to use visual light, Infrared (IR), Thermal, and X-Rays and can be sent into a situation where explosives or other dangerous material is reported or expected to be thereby preventing the injury or death of a bomb technician or other law enforcement officer.

Though it comes with a hefty price tag of $446,815, it would be paid for with FY24 Federal Port Security Grant.

Remotec, the manufacturer of these robots, has demonstrated the many uses of this piece of equipment, especially in a city with a port and an airport.

So far this year, the Mobile Police Department’s Bomb Squad has been called out to other cities for assistance in bomb threats, including Fairhope and Bay Minette.
