A daycare worker in Mobile has been arrested by the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office for child abuse after an investigation of an assault that was brought to their attention.
The complaint said that on February 19, 2025, the family of an 8-month-old who was at the Lighthouse Academy, filed a complaint with the Prichard Police and The Department of Human Resources.
The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by the family on March 11, 2025, and took over the case.
After reviewing a video which shows Ms. Kia Baldwin, an employee of Lighthouse Academy picking up an infant from the floor and violently throwing him down into the crib, Baldwin was arrested for one count of child abuse.
The sheriff’s department said that the incident occurred on February 18, 2025, however, Baldwin did not report the incident until the following day, February 19, 2025.
On the morning of February 19, 2025, Baldwin reported to the Director of Lighthouse Academy, that the 8-month-old infant had been observed picking up a rock and placing it in his mouth. Baldwin stated that in an attempt to remove the rock, she performed a “finger sweep.” She further reported that she did not choke the infant but acknowledged causing bruising around his neck while trying to retrieve the rock.
As a result of Baldwin’s actions, the infant sustained bruising on the left side and back of his neck, bruising on his upper left shoulder area, and a small mark on the left side of his jawline, consistent with a fingernail injury.
Baldwin was terminated immediately due to the incident itself and failing to report the incident in a timely manner.
