Loxley Police Fatally Shoot Suicidal Man

Loxley Ala.

A call for help came into the Baldwin County 911 communications center at around 6:12 p.m.

The caller stated that a man wasn’t acting right and requested an ambulance.

Another call stated that the man was suicidal and Loxley police were dispatched to a home just off Highway 90. Local firefighters and a Medstar ambulance were also dispatched to the scene and waited away from the house.

Officers entered the home and announced themselves as they entered the bedroom where 74-year -old Glenn Dawson was along with several other people.
There was some conversation and Dawson was armed with a gun.
According to Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office Col. Anthony Lowery, at some point, Dawson raised his gun and a police officer fired one shot to defend himself and the other officer.

Mr. Dawson was struck in the chest but the other relatives in the room were not injured.

Dawson was terminally ill with cancer, and we think that was a factor in what went on there,” Lowery said.

“The suspect had multiple weapons, multiple guns,” Lowery said. “I will say the officers after the shooting immediately attempted lifesaving measures it was unfortunate they weren’t able to save him.”

Glenn Dawson had a background in law enforcement. He was a part of the Daphne Police Department from 1973 to 1996.

According to the BCSO Major Crimes Unit has now taken over the investigation.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave. This is standard procedure in most police officer involved shootings nationwide.
