The Fairhope Police Department working in collaboration with the FBI has made a felony arrest of a person suspected of exploiting an elderly person.

An elderly woman lost over $100,000 in this incident.

The victim, who had recently purchased a new vehicle, noticed charges for an anti-theft service. Upon researching the company’s name online, she unfortunately encountered a spoofed site that led her to scammers.

While trying to cancel her subscription, the person on the line promised to reimburse her for the charges. Subsequently, scammers contacted her, claiming they had mistakenly deposited $100,000 into her account. They then pressured her with fear tactics, threatening her with trouble if she did not return the money.

The scammers collected her personal banking information and installed software on her phone and computer, enabling them to access her devices remotely. They facilitated a wire transfer and pressured her to withdraw money from her bank, instructing her to meet them in a local parking lot. They even visited her home to collect cash.

On Friday, October 4, 2024, law enforcement coordinated another “meet to pay” situation with the suspect, leading to the arrest of 37-year-old Kamal Hussain from Clarkston, Georgia.  Hussain was charged with Financial Exploitation of the Elderly.
