BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. Federal and local law enforcement teamed up during this week to make almost 50 arrests of illegal immigrants, many found working on local construction sites.

The Gulf of America Homeland Security Task Force has repeatedly stated that there are thousands of illegal immigrants in Mobile and Baldwin Counties, many who return to the US after being deported back to their home countries.

Once again, the Homeland Security Investigators stated that businesses, especially those involved in the construction industry, continue to act irresponsibly not properly vetting their employees through the E-Verify government system that verifies that a person has a Social Security number and is legally able to work in the US.

Authorities swarmed several large construction sites including the new Gulf Shores High School where three dozen undocumented workers were taken into custody, and an elementary school on County Road 64 in Loxley.

Many of these companies employing illegal migrants are using them as cheap labor and do not pay the same hourly wages that legal workers would receive.
Authorities have stated numerous times that many companies are taking advantage of these undocumented workers and traffic them from one place to the other.

Steven Schrank, Special Agent in Charge for HSI in Alabama and Georgia, said that ICE has a voluntary program called IMAGE that helps businesses make sure they’re hiring legally. It offers E-Verify, training, and audit help. Homeland Security says it’s a tool for honest companies trying to compete fairly.

Federal law enforcement has repeatedly stated that employers who knowingly hire illegal workers can be fined and can also be arrested.
