A driver on State Highway 180 in Fort Morgan struck an alligator that was crossing the roadway and wrecked their vehicle Saturday night.
The Baldwin County Communications Center received a call about the wreck and the driver stated that the car was also leaking fuel.

The Fort Morgan and Gulf Shores Fire Departments were dispatched to the site of the wreck at 10325 State Highway 180 just before 8:00 p.m.
Law enforcement was also dispatched to the scene.

After calling 911, the female driver and a male passenger decided to get out of their vehicle to possibly check on the damage, the alligator, or both, while they waited for help and that’s when the male said that the alligator nipped him.

911 operators said that they then received another call from the driver asking for an ambulance to check out the male for any injuries.

Firefighters arrived and assisted the vehicle’s occupants and re-routed traffic away from the area.

Authorities reported that there were no serious injuries.

It is not unusual to see alligators in the Fort Morgan area and according to scientific research, alligators are nocturnal, with an interesting tendency to be diurnal. They are most active at night but can also be active during the daytime as they often prefer to bask in the sun.

The condition of the alligator is unknown.
