Bayou la Batre police officer’s home searched while he was taken into custody

MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. September 26, 2024

A Bayou La Batre police officer was taken away in handcuffs accused of possible sexual misconduct with minors.

Sheriff Paul Burch said Bayou La Batre Police Officer B.J. Squires was taken into custody and deputies were searching his home for evidence relating to sexual misconduct with underage girls and possible other offenses.

Burch says they have received multiple complaints and victims have come forward. He says this has been going on for an estimated 10 years, but he did not say whether there had been previous complaints or allegations regarding these encounters.

Mobile County deputies served a search warrant on the home of  Squires Wednesday and investigators seized several electronic devices.

Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch says he wouldn’t have issued a warrant if he didn’t think there was something to the allegation.

“There’s nothing worse than a dirty cop. Again, he’s innocent until proven guilty,” said Sheriff Burch.

The Sheriff himself was at the scene of the search and said that some parents began reaching out to his office after they felt they were getting no help from neither the Bayou La Batre police department nor the Mobile County public school system on claims against officer Squires having inappropriate relationships with children at schools where he worked as a resource officer.

“More information will be released soon said Sheriff Burch.”
